How Big Is the Real Thing? A Buyer's Guide to Canvas Formats
One of the most common questions we hear at Little Art Story is: "How do I know which size to choose?" It's a great question — and the answer starts with understanding what makes each of our three canvas formats different. Whether you're shopping for yourself or choosing a gift, this guide will help you pick the right print before it arrives at your door.
Miniature Editions: Small in Scale, Big on Character
A Miniature is a compact reproduction — typically in the range of 3" × 4" to 6" × 8", depending on the artwork. These are intentionally small, and that's exactly their charm.
Who they're for: Miniatures are a wonderful fit when you want art in a space that can't carry a large format — a narrow hallway, a bookshelf, a bedside table, or a child's reading nook. They also make thoughtful, giftable pieces that are easy to frame and display in groupings.
What to keep in mind: Because a Miniature is scaled down significantly from the original painting, the composition and color are preserved — but fine surface detail, like individual brushstrokes, will be less visible than on a larger format. For portraits, botanical studies, and bold compositions, Miniatures work beautifully. For heavily textured works where scale is part of the experience, consider stepping up to True Size.
Miniatures are also an easy entry point for anyone who loves the idea of living with a masterwork but wants to start small — literally.
True Size: The Original Dimensions, Exactly
Our True Size format is exactly what it says: the print is produced at the same dimensions as the original painting. If Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring measures 44.5 cm × 39 cm (about 17.5" × 15.4"), that's precisely the size you receive.
This is the format at the heart of our The Masters — True Size collection, and it's the most historically grounded way to experience a work of art outside a museum.
Why original dimensions matter: Every composition was created by the artist at a specific scale. Portraits were often painted life-size or near life-size. Intimate cabinet paintings were small by design — meant to be held, passed around, and studied up close. When you receive a True Size print, you're experiencing the artwork at the proportion the painter intended. Nothing is inflated, nothing is shrunk to fit a standard frame.
Framing a True Size print: Because True Size dimensions follow the original painting rather than standard frame sizes, you may need a custom frame or a mat to adapt it to a common frame size. We cover this in detail on our FAQ page. Float frames and gallery-style frames with a wide mat are popular choices that let the print breathe without forcing it into a box it was never meant to fill.
Wall placement: True Size prints are best appreciated at or near eye level, viewed from a comfortable conversational distance — roughly 1 to 2 metres. Because the scale matches the original, they sit naturally on walls without overpowering a room. A True Size Vermeer looks at home above a console table or beside a reading chair in a way that an over-scaled reproduction never quite does.
Room Edition: Artwork Scaled for the Wall
The Room Edition is our largest format. Here, the print is scaled up — sometimes significantly — to suit modern wall proportions and interior spaces where art needs to carry visual weight across a room.
Room Editions are labeled clearly in the product listing. The dimensions you see are the actual print size, not the original painting size.
Scale and furniture: A Room Edition is designed to be read from across the room. Think of a sofa wall in a living room, a large dining room feature wall, or an open-plan space where art needs to anchor the eye. As a rough guide, a print should fill roughly two-thirds of the width of the furniture below it. A large sectional sofa may call for a Room Edition where a smaller piece would feel lost.
Framing choices: At Room Edition scale, simple frames tend to work best — thin floating frames, slim metal profiles, or unframed canvas with wrapped edges. Heavy ornate frames can compete with the artwork at this size. Many customers choose to display Room Editions unframed for a clean, contemporary look.
What changes at scale: Enlarging a painting reveals brushstroke texture and surface detail that is invisible at True Size or Miniature scale. For thickly painted works — think Van Gogh's swirling skies or Rembrandt's impasto highlights — a Room Edition can be a genuinely different visual experience. Color fields become immersive. A Room Edition is less about studying the painting and more about living inside it.

How to Choose Before You Buy
Here's a simple process that helps most buyers land on the right format:
1. Measure your wall first. Note the width of the wall and the width of any furniture below it. If you have 180 cm of sofa, you're likely looking at a Room Edition. If you have 60 cm of open wall beside a doorway, a True Size or Miniature is probably the right fit.
2. Consider your viewing distance. Will people see this print from across the room, or from a metre away? Miniatures and True Size prints reward close looking. Room Editions are made to be read at distance.
3. Think about framing effort. If you want a completely straightforward framing experience, a Miniature is the easiest — standard small frames are widely available. True Size prints may need a custom mat. Room Editions are often displayed unframed or in simple floater frames.
4. Ask yourself what experience you want. Intimacy and historical accuracy? True Size. Cozy, giftable, and flexible? Miniature. A room-defining statement? Room Edition.
