Neoclassicism
Neoclassicism arose in the late eighteenth century as painters looked back to the order and restraint of classical antiquity, in step with the era's Enlightenment ideals. In France it became closely tied to the Revolution, while American painters of the same period brought a similar formality and dignity to portraiture back home.
This collection includes David's The Death of Socrates, Ingres's Princesse de Broglie, and Gilbert Stuart's Lansdowne Portrait of George Washington. Each canvas is made to order on stretched canvas, with its size labeled against the true dimensions of the original.
