Georges de La Tour was a French Baroque painter known for candlelit scenes built from deep shadow and a single glowing light source. His quiet, contemplative subjects stand apart from the grander history painting of his time, and his reputation was largely rediscovered only in the twentieth century, long after his name had faded from view.
