Church painted this blazing Maine sky in 1860 — pure American wilderness, no figure, no settlement, only one small bird on a branch at left. Later viewers have read the burning clouds as a premonition of the Civil War that broke out months after; the Cleveland Museum of Art dates and documents the painting.
