A Sunday on La Grande Jatte — Seurat (1884-86)
The sunlit grass is not the colour Seurat painted.
His zinc yellow pigment browned within five years of finishing — confirmed by Art Institute of Chicago conservation scientists using X-ray spectroscopy on paint samples. And in 1889 he re-stretched the finished canvas to add a painted border of red, orange and blue dots. The original is enormous: over 2 × 3 metres, built from roughly two years of work and dozens of studies.
- Honest scale — the original is 207.5 × 308.1 cm (6¾ × 10 ft). Every size we offer is a Room Edition; our largest, 48 × 32″, is about one-third of true size.
- Verified story — the zinc-yellow degradation, published conservation research with the Art Institute of Chicago.
- Source recorded — the museum's open-access master scan (259 DPI) on matte canvas. Made to order.
