The story of this painting

The Story Behind Monet's Houses of Parliament

The unmistakable silhouette of the Houses of Parliament dissolves into a haze of orange and purple, more sunset than building. Monet wanted the fog as much as he wanted the architecture.

What you're looking at

Claude Monet painted this view of the Houses of Parliament in 1900-01, working in the late afternoon and at sunset from a terrace at St Thomas's Hospital, directly across the River Thames from the building. Instead of a crisp architectural record, Parliament's towers become a dark silhouette against a glowing, fog-thickened sky, the whole scene unified by London's famous atmospheric haze.

Chasing fog on purpose

Monet made several extended trips to London specifically to paint this kind of atmosphere — the way coal smoke and river mist combined to filter and color the city's light in ways Paris simply didn't offer. Rather than treating the fog as an obstacle to painting the building clearly, he treated it as the actual subject, letting Parliament's familiar outline become almost secondary to the color and mood of the sky and river around it. Working from a fixed vantage point on the hospital terrace let him study the same view under constantly shifting light, building a whole series of paintings from slightly different times of day and weather.

One detail to look for

Look at how little architectural detail Monet actually gives you. The towers and spires you recognize as Parliament are really just a dark shape — nearly all the "information" in the painting is in the color and texture of the fog and light around it.
