The Child's Bath — Mary Cassatt (1893)

Product description

The tipped-down view is borrowed from Japanese prints.

Cassatt saw the landmark 1890 exhibition of Japanese woodblock prints in Paris and adopted their flattened, bird's-eye viewpoint for this painting — the Art Institute's own curators trace the composition directly to it. Art historians also read her domestic subjects as the spaces genuinely open to a woman painter in 1890s Paris, barred from the café scenes her male colleagues painted.

  • Honest scale — the original is 101.3 × 67.3 cm (40 × 26½ in). Our 24 × 36″ canvas is 90% of true size.
  • Verified story — the Japanese-print connection, sourced at the Art Institute of Chicago; the "spaces of femininity" reading is attributed scholarship, not a claim about Cassatt's own words.
  • Source recorded — the museum's open-access master scan on matte canvas. Made to order.
