The Great Wave — Hokusai (1830/33), true size

Product description

Meet The Great Wave at the size Hokusai actually printed it.

Not a painting — a woodblock print, smaller than a page of newspaper. The actual sheet is 25.4 × 37.6 cm, one of an estimated 5,000–8,000 impressions pulled before the blocks wore out. Its blue is Prussian blue — a synthetic pigment newly imported into Japan in the 1830s, which the Art Institute's own record credits for the series' impact.

  • Honest scale — our 14 × 11″ canvas prints it at effectively true size. The 32 × 24″ shows it the way posters do — 2× the original.
  • Verified story — the pigment and print-run history, sourced at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Met.
  • Source recorded — the museum's open-access scan (477 DPI at true size) on matte canvas. Made to order.
