Water Lilies — Claude Monet (1906)

Water Lilies — Claude Monet (1906)

Product description

The pond in this painting almost didn't exist.

When Monet petitioned to divert a river branch into his garden at Giverny, neighbours objected that his exotic plants would poison the water and their cattle — and the council first said no. He appealed and won. Years later he painted the pond like this: no bank, no horizon, no sky except what the water reflects. The Art Institute's own catalogue notes this canvas marks his move to painting the water's surface alone.

  • Honest scale — the original is 89.9 × 94.1 cm, nearly square and under a metre — far smaller than the room-size murals people imagine. Our 32 × 32″ canvas is about 87% of true size.
  • Verified story — the permit fight and the all-water composition, sourced at the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Gallery.
  • Source recorded — the museum's open-access master scan (352 DPI) on matte canvas. Made to order.
